Everyone Needs Friends, Right?

Friends of the Chelsea District Library is a member-supported, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that fundraises, advocates, and works with community members and volunteers to support the Chelsea District Library. Become a member of the Friends or be a library volunteer and help build a strong, thriving community.

The next sale is Saturday, June 14 from 10am–1pm.

Our monthly Used Book Sale is held the second Saturday of every month and is the primary source of income for the Friends. Thousands of beautiful books, CDs, DVDs, audiobooks and other items are available for purchase. Proceeds from the sales are used to support the Library. Stop by the Friendly Book Cart, always available in the lobby for a great selection of “like-new” books at bargain prices.

Get Involved!

How do you get involved with the Friends of Chelsea District Library? There are many ways to support the library with the Friends. Donate gently used books. Volunteer to help with the Used Book Sale. Make a financial contribution.

Who We Are

The Friends of the Chelsea District Library have been in existence since 1949, and in that time they have raised thousands of dollars for the library and its programs. Many friends also donate their time and energies serving on the organization’s board, attending community events and in the planning and assisting with many fundraising efforts, including the used book sales.

Our Mission

Everybody needs friends, right? In addition to providing moral support and being a cheerleader for our library, The Friends of Chelsea District Library:

  • Provide financial assistance for library programs, and supplement the purchase of materials and equipment
  • Increase the visibility of the library in the community
  • Provide volunteer aid to the library
  • Recognize and appreciate the work of our library staff

2024 Friend of the Year Gary Zenz
Gary has served CDL both as a library trustee and as a member and leader of the library’s Friends group in countless ways since 1985. He has been a leader in organizing and directing meetings, work projects, and fundraising. He has been willing to do whatever needs done to help the library—from shelving books for the opening day of our building, to replacing lightbulbs in high ceilings, to building handrails for patron safety—and recently with summarizing the history and current work of the Friends in a slide show presentation for our 75th anniversary. And, he did all this with a pleasant smile and attitude!
